Sunscreens are widely used in marine nature parks. Some scientific reports have expressed concern that sunscreens may affect the coral reef.

To overcome any doubts regarding the influence of Safe Sea® on coral reefs, fisheries or the marine environment, Safe Sea® was developed as a fully water-resistant formula.

Swimmers who are using Safe Sea® can be assured of the benefits of sun protection and jellyfish sting without releasing active or non-active compounds into the marine environment.

The effect of Safe Sea® in marine environments includes the following tests:

1. Safe Sea® water-resistant performance

Retention of active ingredients after long-term immersion in water.

3. In vivo test of the behavior of fish in water exposed to Safe Sea®.

Experiment 1: Safe Sea® Water Resistance Performance

Samples of 0.2 g of Safe Sea® SPF50 and a well-known brand of sunscreen SPF50 are immersed in 200 ml of water and shaken for 10 min.

Figure 1:
Depicts the behavior of Safe Sea® and the sunscreen brand in water:

Conclusions:

The branded sunscreen dissolved in water, while Safe Sea® did not leak
; it maintained its original form while all the Safe Sea actives held together.

Experiment 2: Retention of active ingredients after long-term immersion in water

A sunscreen can be considered water resistant if 50% of the original certified Sun Protection Factor (SPF) remains on the skin after 40 minutes of water activity (Table 1).

This test protocol takes into account that, after intense aquatic activity, a normal sunscreen would lose about half of the active ingredients of its formula in water.

Table 1. Standard Water Resistance Protocol:

Safe Sea® SPF50 was measured at AMA LAB, USA and was found to have an SPF of 54.

The very-water-resistance test (80 minutes) was performed, and after 80 minutes of water activity, the protection level of Safe Sea® remained at SPF 53.

This fantastic result proves that even under extreme immersion conditions Safe Sea® does not release active ingredients into the water (Table 2).

Table 2. Safe Sea® Water Resistance Test:

Conclusions: Safe Sea® 50 does not release chemicals. Beyond the benefits of maintaining its high protection, Safe Sea® has no effect on coral reefs or the marine environment.

Experiment 3: Essay in vivo of fish behavior in water exposed to Safe Sea®.

To ensure that Safe Sea® has no influence on aquatic life, we adopted an additional method that was used to control the influence of a sunscreen on the marine environment.

Safe Sea® was added to the water at a concentration of 69-300mg/L (Fig. 2) and its impact on fish behavior is comparable to regular control water. Fish in the control water and in the water treated with Safe Sea® showed the same behavior.

Figure 2: Behavior of fish in water treated with Safe Sea®.

Conclusions: Safe Sea® was shown to be safe for organisms living in water. It is water resistant, does not release actives and does not dissolve in water after prolonged activity. All Safe Sea® ingredients are retained in its formula and are not released into the aquatic environment.

Answers for skeptics

No.

Unlike many traditional sunscreens that release chemicals into the water, Safe Sea® has been rigorously tested to prove that its formula is completely water resistant and does not dissolve, preventing any negative impact on coral reefs.

No.

According to tests conducted in specialized laboratories, even after 80 minutes of continuous immersion, Safe Sea® maintains its sun protection factor without releasing active ingredients into the water.

Yes.

An in vivo study showed that fish exposed to Safe Sea® treated water did not show any behavioral alterations compared to fish in untreated water.

This confirms that Safe Sea® does not affect aquatic organisms.

Unlike conventional sunscreens, which can dissolve in water and affect the marine ecosystem, Safe Sea® features innovative technology for extreme water resistance, ensuring that all its ingredients remain on the skin without contaminating the environment.

Yes, Safe Sea® is the only sunscreen developed with anti-jellyfish technology.

Its formula is inspired by the natural defense mechanisms of clownfish, which inhabit the tentacles of anemones without being affected. Safe Sea® helps prevent stings by blocking the activation of jellyfish stinging tentacles, significantly reducing the risk of contact and skin reaction.
